Healthy Birthday Snack Alternatives

HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES FOR SCHOOL BIRTHDAY TREATS

Many school parties consist of a snack table filled with cupcakes, cookies and candy. Children enjoy these foods and they can be part of a healthy diet when eaten only occasionally. There are many other ways to help your child and his/her classmates celebrate their special day. Because child obesity is on the rise, it is crucial that we do not always use sweets as a reward. Sweets have become the norm, not the exception. That is not to say we cannot celebrate with sweets but since there are so many birthday celebrations in school classrooms it may be wise to limit the sweets. After all, school is a great place for kids to learn the value of making healthy food choices.

The staff would like your support as parents in this endeavor. Our Wellness Policy is one that encourages parents to supply nutritious party food. This means no overly sweet snacks, no frosting, candy, cupcakes, ice cream, etc., for birthday parties. We encourage you to please find other ways to celebrate your child's special day aside from sugar treats and sweets. You'll be surprised at the impact your small act can have on our children.
